In 1880, a horse-drawn cart traveled Windmiller Hill (now Madison Avenue) offering fresh produce to the residents of Mankato, Minnesota. That humble operation quickly evolved into a brick-and-mortar shop selling flowers and plants. One of only a few florists in the area, its pieces became prized memorials for funerals across the Midwest.

 

Over the years Hilltop Florist and Greenhouse grew and became a bustling retail florist and garden center. In 1976, the business was purchased by Larry Van Tol and Noel Van Tol , from Noel’s parents Eddie and Marguerite Keane. We are proud to be a family-owned operation.

 

Today, CEO Kathy Van Tol  oversees a staff of talented and creative floral designers and horticulturists. Grower Mark Resch continually researches unique new flowers and plants along with innovative and eco-friendly growing techniques.

Hilltop Florist makes regular deliveries Monday through Saturday and funeral deliveries daily.

Orders placed by 2:00 pm (CST) receive same day delivery. All flowers arrive by special delivery with a smile from our friendly staff.

Kathy joined the team at Hilltop Florist and Greenhouse in 1990. Her education and extensive background in architecture and interior design make her an amazing asset to the organization. Kathy manages all aspects of the business ranging from the retail shop to daily operations of the greenhouse.

 

Her tireless work ethic, keen eye for market trends and skill at maintaining a professional high quality staff helps to achieve our mission and goals of our predecessors while providing the highest quality product and superior customer service.

 

Kathy is also a valued member of the local community dedicating her time and talents to the MRCI Foundation Board, YMCA, Mayo Clinic Health Systems Auxiliary Board and more.

As a successful business man, Larry graduated from the University of Minnesota and became a top corporate executive at an early age. After deciding to relocate to Mankato, he and his partner Noel Van Tol, purchased Hilltop Florist and Greenhouse in 1976.  He decided to return to school to obtain his Horticulture degree. He has successfully grown Hilltop from a small florist to a large multifaceted company. His knowledge of plants and extensive growing experience continues to be one of the companies most valuable assets. His attention to detail, dedication and determination to be the best has proven to be the cornerstone of Hilltop Florist and Greenhouse.

 

Noel’s talents, along with her roots, run deep. Purchasing Hilltop from her parents Eddie and Marquerite Keane, her loyalty, dedication and foresight have provided the essential building blocks to grow and redefine Hilltop Florist.  An industry leader, serving on the boards of several florist associations help to keep Hilltop on the cutting edge of the floral business. Noel is a creative and innovative florist, who has mentored many inspiring floral designers throughout the years. Her involvement in the arts and local community has brought her much joy and recognition. She truly believes flowers work their way into our souls and become a lifetime necessity.
